Google takes China to task over attacks — threatens to leave

100112_google.jpgTo be clear, after what Google called a “highly sophisticated and targeted attack,” Google is now going to review their options when it comes to China, starting with the new policy to cease the government mandated censorship on Google.cn. If that cannot happen, Google is gone. In a statement, Google said they were not alone during the attack. Internal investigations revealed that at least twenty other companies were hit, covering a wide range of sectors including Internet, finance, technology, media and chemical. When the statement was released earlier this evening, the other companies were not named, but Google said they are in the process of notifying them. The attack targeted Chinese human rights activists and Intellectual Property owned by Google, but it is unknown exactly what this IP was. The attempts on the human rights activists failed for the most part Google said, but there were at least two accounts accessed. “…that activity was limited to account information (such as the date the account was created) and subject line, rather than the content of emails themselves,” noted Google when detailing what was accessed on the two accounts.
