Companies call for ‘credible’ climate action

2009-09-25_climate-action.jpgA group of 500 global businesses, including dozens of Australian corporations, have called for “credible” action on climate change. The publication of the so-called Copenhagen Communique comes two months before the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen in December, amid fears the meeting will fail to put in place an agreement to effectively cut the carbon emissions blamed for global climate change.
Local companies such as National Australia Bank, Linfox and Insurance Australia Group have said they support limiting the global average temperature rise to less then 2 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels. The businesses are calling for emissions to be reduced by 50-85 per cent by 2050.
The communique’s release overnight has been timed to coincide with the UN Summit on Climate Change at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Global signatories include The Coca-Cola Company, KPMG, Philips, Novartis, and Sun Microsystems. Image source: > Continue
