The oil giant was widely recognised as the first oil company to both acknowledge and tackle climate change. Also, its in-house carbon trading scheme &#8211; built with a little help from an unlikely ally, the US-based Environmental Defense Fund &#8211; was among the first of its kind. However, a change of chief executive has led to an apparent change of policy. In April, CEO Tony Hayward announced that safety was the company&#8217;s &#8220;number one priority&#8221;.
