The 48-year-old Volkert, who was the main representative of Volkswagen’s 300,000 workers, was sentenced on Friday to two years and nine months in jail after he was found guilty of abusing his position to pay out $3 million in illegal bonuses, including benefits to a former Brazilian lover totaling $590,000. Volkert’s protestations that he had done nothing wrong and that “class prejudice” was making him–a labor representative–the scapegoat, won him no sympathy from the court. “He knew that he had no right to the payments,” said Judge Gerstin Dreyer in her ruling. “Volkert did not let up and kept coming back for more.” Image source: newsimg.bbc.co.uk. > Continue.

News selected by Covalence | Country: Global | Company: Volkswagen | Source: Forbes

Volkswagen is hoping that it can put a scandal involving sex, bribery and corruption in the rearview mirror following the conviction of Klaus Volkert, the former head of the company’s workers council, on 48 counts of inciting fraud.
