Shell not that bad in Niger delta, says UN report

A UNEP report says that Shell is only responsible for 10% of oil spills in the Niger delta over the last 40 years, “the rest has come from local people illegally stealing oil and sabotaging company pipelines”, reveals The Guardian. The report by the United Nations Environment Programme generated many entries in Covalence EthicalQuote database over the last 24 hours.

Two third of entries were coded positively — “Shell is not as bad as we thought”, and one third negatively — “this report is biased”, “Shell is a big polluter”, reflecting the view of Ogoni activists and environmental NGOs. News articles highlight the fact that the UNEP report has been commissioned by the Nigerian government and funded by Shell.
